NOTE: Shows light toning to both sides, thus reflects in low price for a Piedfort.
A new and smaller fifty-pence coin introduced in 1997 and to mark the change the Royal Mint has issued a Silver Proof Piedfort version.
Smaller and lighter than its predecessor the new coin will has retain the shape of an equilateral curve heptagon which, at its introduction in 1969 made the fifty pence the world's first seven-sided coin. It continues to boast on its reverse the historic figure of Britannia, an elegant seated figure prepared by Christopher Ironside at the time of decimalisation.
