From Colouring Book to Worldwide Hit

When, in 1939, a department store chain in Chicago decided to publish a colouring book for children, no one could have guessed that it would give rise to one of the most famous Christmas songs worldwide! The touching story of poor reindeer Rudolph who is teased by all around him for his shiny red nose but who ultimately is allowed, full pride, to guide Father Christmas' sleigh, was just right for the release date which was during the lead-up to Christmas. The success was overwhelming - the colouring book quickly developed into a bestseller! By 1946 more than 6 million copies of Rudolph, the "Red-Nosed Reindeer" had been sold in the USA.
The idea to use this story for a song came from the author's brother-in-law. And so right in time for Christmas, in December 1949, appeared the first recording of the song. The record rapidly became an equally big hit as the book. Until today, it is said that over 12 million copies have been sold!
