At least 900 ships took part in the evacuation of Dunkirk, possibly as many as 1,200. The majority of men who made it back across the Channel did so in a big ship, usually a Royal Navy destroyer. However, it was the assorted collection of little ships - the yachts, sloops, trawlers, tugs, RNLI lifeboats, dockyard lighters and sailing barges - that captured the public's imagination.
