Throughout its 250-year history, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew have been many things to many people. From its origin as an 18th-century royal playground, Kew grew into a 19th-century hub of colonial exploration and commerce before becoming the scientific institution it is today. The international importance of Kew's work and collections was recognised when it was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2004.
