Part of the official commemorative coin collection in honour of H.M. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother "Summer 1945 at Balmoral Castle". Notes: The war years had taken a toll on King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and their daughters, and now they were confronted with the difficult task of rebuilding their home, Windsor Castle. Due to the great burden on him, the King was on the verge of collapsing, for this reason, the Royal Family was happy when finally the summer holidays came and, with them, the beloved stay at Balmoral. Queen Victoria had purchased the castle by the River Dee in the Scottish Highlands in 1852. When it became too small for the family, her husband Prince Albert designed a new residence in the style of the Scottish land gentry. "New Balmoral" was built between 1853 and 1856 and became the preferred summer seat of all Royal Families. The Queen Mother has maintained her love of the Scottish Highlands until her Death.
