Similar to America's Lady Liberty, Britannia is the cherished female personification of British liberty and democracy. Britannia; dating from 1672 on British coins, is a patriot, a warrior, protector of peace and prosperity. The demand from collectors for the government backed Silver Proof Britannia continues to outpace supply since being introduced in 1997 by The Royal Mint. This 2016 over-sized silver proof Britannia is struck from a full 5 Troy oz. of .999 fine silver, carries a 10 Pound face value, is 65mm in diameter, and a micro mintage of 550 coins.
The reverse, designed by Suzie Zamit, depicts Britannia with shield and trident, looking out over a calm sea, accompanied by a lion, the symbol of protection. "BRITANNIA," "5 oz FINE SILVER 999," "2016" encircle the magnificent image. The obverse features the royal effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, created by Jody Clark. The inscriptions "ELIZABETH II, D.G. REG. F.D., 10 POUNDS, 2016" surround the image.
